The Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services’ Alum Rock Park rangers hosted two successful holiday events in collaboration with the Youth Science Institute and the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority on Dec. 15: an Owl Walk and a Campfire. Both events aimed to connect people to nature. The Owl Walk hosted 120 visitors and featured a live owl presentation, an introduction to owling by the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society and an evening walk in the park with warm apple cider. The second-annual Holiday Campfire, attended by 150 participants, featured a wildlife presentation, games, s’mores, and a visit from Santa Claus who arrived in a ranger ATV. Two barrels full of toys were collected at the events for Sacred Heart Community Services, who will distribute them to San José children in need.
